Apple now enforcing no UDID usage in apps

Friday, March 22, 2013

Richard Harris Richard Harris

It's official. Apple posted this to developers that Starting May 1, the App Store will no longer accept new apps or app updates that access UDIDs. They are asking developers to no longer use the UDID in the UIDevice Class Reference and to start using the Vendor or Advertising identifiers introduced in iOS 6.

There was no word of Apple removing any apps that are currently active in the App Store still using the UDID reference, but it could happen sometime this year so Apple developers need to pay attention to this posting especially.

This should not come as a surprise to anyone because Apple warned this was coming last year when they began deprecating their use and support for the UDID reference in general.

The UDID is an alphanumeric string unique to each device based on various hardware details. (read-only) (Deprecated in iOS 5.0. Use the identifierForVendor property of this class or theadvertisingIdentifier property of the ASIdentifierManager class instead, as appropriate, or use the UUID method of the NSUUID class to create a UUID and write it to theuser defaults database.)
